The city of Azusa, California was made famous by the great Jack Benny calling it “The city with everything from A to Z.” Azusa has a long history going back to the gold rush days where in 1854, gold was discovered in the San Gabriel Canyon, and a town called Doradoville was built. For a period of about 20 years, the gold mined from the Azusa Canyon area was estimated to total in excess of $12,000,000 and was shipped to numerous mints in the United States. It has a vast history of farming, including orange groves and vineyards. It even has a history back in the days of The Mob; the Azusa Canyon became famous for dead body drop-offs.
The name Azusa was originally named Asuksa-nga by the Shoshone Indians around 1769 when the first homesteaders settled in the area. The name was changed when Don Enrique Dalton named the town Azusa Rancho de Dalton, which became what is known today as Azusa.
Because of its long history covering hundreds of years, many of the homes were built in the 1940s and 1950s to meet the needs of the baby boomer generation and the troops coming back after the war. This means that there are a high number of homes that were built out of wood construction.
While Azusa is a great place to live, mild temperatures in the winter and fall leading to hot temperatures reaching over 100 degrees into summer does require knowledge, planning and maintenance to keep aging homes in tip-top condition.
One of the biggest problems that can arise with a property is mold damage. Many people overlook checking for mold in their property if the signs are not clearly visible. Mold can stay hidden behind walls, where a slow plumbing leak, not detected for years, can trap moisture in a secluded area of a home where it can thrive.
It has become an industry standard and highly recommended that all homes, of old or new construction, be inspected for potential unknown leaks and moisture which can create a breeding ground for mold. Older buildings tend to have weak roofs, and siding should be checked because rain as humidity can seep underneath without notice. Older buildings are also known to have weak, brittle piping. This can be a hazard waiting to happen with hidden leaks. Older windows and window frames can also weaken over time, resulting in leaks. Many scenarios regarding older structures can create breeding grounds for indoor mold. If you have allergies, you may not have considered that mold could be a factor in aggravating or even intensifying your symptoms. Lastly, if you have had the unfortunate experience of water damage from a sewer problem, it is definitely time for a sewer backup cleanup.
It does not matter if you live in old or new construction, mold does not play favorites. Even new construction can hide mold as construction is tighter to insulate. Less circulation can trap airborne contaminants, such as mold within the walls, ceiling, and floor cavities, causing extensive damage and health concerns.
